The Native American Community
Native Americans, including Alaska Natives, make up approximately 2% of the U.S. population, yet they are one of the most underrepresented and underserved groups in the country. With over 574 federally recognized tribes along with numerous diaspora descendants across community and color lines, Native Americans hold have rich histories, cultures, and contributions rooted in land stewardship, sovereignty, and restorative justice that shape our conversations on climate, community, and collective action across the nation and beyond.
Key Issues Facing Native Americans:

-
Land and Environmental Protection: Native American communities have long been stewards of the land, yet they continue to face issues of land dispossession, exploitation of natural resources, and lack of protection for sacred sites.
-
Healthcare Disparities: Despite treaty obligations, many Native American communities face critical healthcare shortages, with issues like high rates of diabetes, heart disease, and inadequate access to mental health services.
-
Housing and Economic Inequality: Native Americans experience some of the highest rates of poverty and homelessness. Housing insecurity and lack of economic opportunities on reservations continue to be significant barriers to progress.
-
Educational Barriers: Native American students often face unequal access to quality education, with dropout rates and underfunded schools creating barriers to higher learning.
-
Voting Rights and Representation: Voter suppression and lack of access to polling stations on reservations have historically disenfranchised Native American communities, leading to underrepresentation in local, state, and federal governments.
